Occupational Therapy in Psychiatric Clinic Sinouri
In the context of the occupational therapy program, the intervention is realized through group activities, mostly within the clinic.
A configured and customized daily schedule is provided based on activities that improve existing skills, aiming at creating new ones according to the psychological needs of the individual.
The group activities are based on role assignments, on the division of a project, on individual and group responsibility, as well as on the management of interaction and collaboration.
The variety of occupational activities that are organized concerns:
- Expressive, creative activities through music, painting, construction, bazaar organization
- Recreational activities through perception games, cognitive enhancement, illustration, expression, movement. Board games, speed games, observation, interaction and cooperation. Film projection.
- Daily life activities within and outside the clinic, self-care, physical education, shopping (kiosk, super-market). Participation in excursions (circus, taverns etc.)
These activities are psychoeducational for the individual, guiding and encouraging him to “work”, so as to involve in actions and activities beneficial to himself. They awaken skills such as memory, attention span, team working, problem solving, while focusing on the operational behavior and help the individual to initially adjust to the new environment in the clinic and then back into the already existing family, friendly and working environment.
To be more specific, occupational therapy aims at physical, perceptual, psychosocial activity in order to support daily life activities, which directly affects the individual’s quality of life. The aim is to help the person get in contact with his functional, creative, productive side with the greatest possible autonomy and independence.
Moreover, another basic aim is to relieve the feeling of confinement, limit stress and develop social and communicational skills within and outside the clinic. Not only self-knowledge, self-understanding and self-acceptance are of great importance through occupational therapy, but also the motivation, the feeling of autonomy and security and the ability to distinguish those elements that block the individual’s personality. Through the program we offer in our clinic the individual will be able to discover and try alternative ways of problem management more creative and functional against isolation and passivity.
